The Amy Salyer-Nicholls Writing Center announced the winners of the Hear My Voice Writing Competition.

Contestants can submit work in four different categories: fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and academic writing. This year, a total of 54 entries were submitted. A panel of HAC faculty determined the top six works in each category, and the Trine student body voted to select the Student Choice Award.

Meghan Schrader took first place in the Academic Writing category with her piece, 鈥淥ut of Place: Julia Ward Howe鈥檚 The Hermaphrodite in 19^th Century Literature.鈥� Parker Tillmon鈥檚 鈥淎 Deeper Look at Nuclear Forensic Chemistry鈥� placed second in the category, and Blake Williams鈥� 鈥淏e a Man: A Marxist Rhetorical Analysis of will Wood鈥檚 鈥業/Me/Myself鈥欌�� took third. Kyle Dixon鈥檚 鈥淪ensationalism and Crime in 19^th Century America鈥� received both the Academic Writing Honorable Mention and Student Choice Award.

Upasana Shrestha鈥檚 鈥淎liens in America鈥� placed first in the Creative Nonfiction category. Meghan Schrader鈥檚 鈥淥de to the College Kid: Is This What They Meant by 鈥榊outh鈥�?鈥� took second place, and Eden Diller鈥檚 鈥淭ime Dependence鈥� placed third.

Jason Branch鈥檚 鈥淧erfect Victim鈥� received both First Place and the Student Choice Award in the Poetry Category. Reese Greene鈥檚 鈥淢ove鈥� placed second, and Meghan Schrader鈥檚 鈥淓arthen Woman鈥� placed third. Blake Williams received an Honorable Mention for his piece, 鈥淭he Summer of Love.鈥�

Muriel Mackie鈥檚 鈥淟ovely as the Day is Long鈥� took first place in the Fiction category. 鈥淭he Village of Abernathy鈥� by Travis Mersing placed second, and Parker Tillmon鈥檚 鈥測our love gave me flowers鈥� placed third. Blake Williams鈥檚 鈥淔actory #234鈥� received an Honorable Mention, and the category鈥檚 Student Choice Award went to Presley Wollan鈥檚 鈥渙n death and dying.鈥�

The winners will be gifted a hard copy book containing the winning entries and will have their names inscribed on a plaque displayed in Taylor Hall. Cash prizes were also awarded, with $100 going to first place, $50 to second place, $25 to third place, $15 for honorable mentions and $10 for Student Choice Award winners.
